The Pod Model

What Is a Dive Pod? The Group Liveaboard Booking Model Explained

The guide-led group booking model changing how divers organise liveaboard trips — what it is, how it works, and why it matters.

The problem every dive group has faced

You want to take your dive club on a liveaboard trip. You find the perfect boat, the perfect dates, the perfect destination. Then reality hits.

You need to coordinate twelve people across different time zones. You need someone to hold the booking. You need deposits from people who "definitely want to go" but haven't sent money yet. You need to email the operator, wait for group pricing, negotiate cabin allocations, and somehow keep track of who has paid what.

Most liveaboard platforms treat every diver as an individual. They were built for solo bookings, not groups. So the person organising the trip — the dive instructor, the club president, the friend who always plans everything — ends up doing unpaid project management on top of their day job.

This is the problem the Dive Pod model solves.

What a Dive Pod actually is

A Dive Pod is a group liveaboard trip organised by a Pod Guide through MyDivePod. The Guide is typically a dive instructor, dive club leader, or community organiser — someone who already has a group of divers who trust them.

Here's how it works in practice:

The Guide browses MyDivePod's marketplace of 150+ liveaboard vessels across destinations like the Red Sea, Maldives, Raja Ampat, Komodo, Galápagos, and Cocos Island. They select a boat, a departure date, and set their group size.

MyDivePod generates a single booking link — the Pod link.

The Guide shares that link with their community: their dive club WhatsApp group, their Instagram followers, their course alumni, their freediving crew. Each diver clicks the link and books their own spot individually, at MyDivePod's marketplace price. No group deposit coordination. No spreadsheet tracking. No "I'll pay you back later."

The Guide earns commission on every confirmed booking in their Pod. The divers get the trip they wanted with the people they already dive with. The operator fills their boat through an organised group with a trusted point of contact.

Everyone's role is clear. Everyone benefits.

How the Pod model differs from traditional liveaboard booking

Traditional liveaboard booking works like this: a platform lists boats, a diver picks one, and the booking is a transaction between one diver and one operator. If a group wants to book together, they either coordinate outside the platform (emails, spreadsheets, group chats) or one person takes on the financial risk of holding multiple cabins.

The Pod model works differently in three fundamental ways.

The group is the unit, not the individual. Every booking made through a Pod link is connected to the same group. The Guide can see who has booked, how many spots remain, and when the Pod is full. Divers can see that their friends are on the same trip.

The organiser is rewarded, not burdened. Guides earn commission on every booking — up to 10% for Founding Guides, 8% for Ambassador Guides — plus any markup they choose to set. Organising a group trip goes from thankless volunteer work to a genuine revenue stream.

Booking stays individual, even in a group. Each diver handles their own payment and cabin selection. No one person holds the financial risk for the whole group. No one is chasing twelve people for deposits.

Who becomes a Pod Guide?

Pod Guides aren't influencers or affiliate marketers. They're dive professionals and community leaders who already organise trips — they just haven't had a platform built for the way they work.

The most common Pod Guides are dive instructors who want to take students beyond the local reef, dive club organisers who coordinate annual trips, dive shop owners looking to offer liveaboard experiences without inventory risk, and underwater photography leaders who run photo-focused expeditions.

What they share is a community that trusts their recommendations. The Pod model turns that trust into a structured booking experience where everyone — Guide, diver, and operator — knows exactly what's happening.

What about pricing?

Divers booking through a Pod pay the same MyDivePod marketplace price they would booking individually, with two built-in benefits: a 5% discount at checkout, and 5% back as loyalty points for future bookings.

These are separate benefits. The checkout discount reduces the immediate price. The loyalty points accumulate as credit for future trips. They are not equivalent to a flat 10% discount — they work differently and reward repeat booking.

Guides can also set an optional markup on top of the marketplace price if they're offering additional value — pre-trip briefings, curated itineraries, dedicated in-water guidance, or trip coordination services. That markup is fully retained by the Guide.

What is an Epic Pod?

Epic Pods are MyDivePod's curated signature group trips to bucket-list destinations. These are pre-built Pods on verified premium vessels with confirmed departures.

Epic Pods are designed for divers who want the group experience — travelling with like-minded divers on a curated itinerary — without needing to know a specific Guide. Think of them as MyDivePod's own Pods, curated by the team and open to anyone.

Current Epic Pod destinations include the Galápagos, Red Sea, Maldives, Raja Ampat, and Cocos Island.

Important: what MyDivePod does and does not do

MyDivePod is a marketplace. It connects divers with liveaboard operators through the Pod booking model. It facilitates bookings and handles payments.

MyDivePod does not own, operate, or crew any vessels. The liveaboard operators listed on the platform are independently owned businesses responsible for vessel safety, crew, dive operations, and the onboard experience. MyDivePod verifies operator credentials and listing accuracy but does not guarantee operational performance.

This distinction matters because it defines accountability clearly. The operator is responsible for the trip. MyDivePod is responsible for the booking experience.
